Trail Riders receive state grant for Jones Creek
CAMAS - The Jones Creek Trail Riders Association has received a $43,628 state grant to maintain the 14-mile network of all-terrain-vehicle and dirt bike trails at Jones Creek in eastern Clark County.
The money comes from the National Recreation and Trails Program administered by Washington's Recreation and Conservation Office.
Members of the association will contribute an additional $18,800 in volunteer labor, fuel, cash and other donations during the two-year grant period. The trails are on the state Department of Natural Resources' Yacolt Burn State Forest. Jones Creek is the only local public area designated for dirt bike and all-terrain-vehicle use.
Mike Ames, public liaison for the Jones Creek Trail Riders Association, said his group was able to compete successfully for the state money based on past grant performance and ability to provide significant matching funds, primarily in donated labor.
"The grant helps to provide the resources - equipment, rock, blocks - necessary to maintain the motorized-use trails in the Jones Creek area,'' Ames said. "Ultimately, it is the DNR's responsibility to maintain the trail system, but proper maintenance would not be possible without the association, along with grant funding.''
The club also has committed 100 hours of volunteer labor in riding areas of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Jones Creek Trail Riders Association members meet at 7 p.m. the last Wednesday of each month at Pied Piper Pizza, 12300 N.E. Fourth Plain Blvd. The meetings are open to the public.

DNR to hold Safety Summit for Off-Road Riders
March 15th event at Straddleline ORV Park will feature free equipment inspections, safety tips, and classes
OLYMPIA – With warmer weather and longer hours of sunlight just around the corner, the State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will present an ORV Safety Summit. The free event will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, March 15, at Straddleline ORV Park, which is on State Route 8 between McCleary and Olympia.
The safety summit will give off-road vehicle (ORV) enthusiasts and those new to the sport opportunities for free:
• Rider skills testing
• Noise and equipment inspections of their ORVs
• Test rides of new ORVs
• Safety seminars
• Search and rescue tips
• Drawings for prizes donated by local ORV dealers and local agencies
No advance registration is required for the day-long event which also includes a free lunch provided by local sponsors.
“This is a chance for adults and kids, newcomers and experienced riders alike, to learn important safety skills,” says Larry Raedel, DNR’s Chief of Law Enforcement Services. “DNR wants everyone to have safe, enjoyable, and sustainable recreational experiences on the more than 3 million acres of state trust lands we manage.”
Chief Raedel says the event is part of DNR’s commitment to teaching the public about safety, enforcing state regulations, and ensuring safe and enjoyable recreation experiences.
Following the four-hour safety summit, visitors are invited to join other DNR volunteers from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on a project to restore an ORV trail in the Capital State Forest, adjacent to Straddleline ORV Park.
Regulations for recreation and public access
Chief Raedel urges ORV riders to stay current on safety rules, such as state laws that require ORV users under age 13 to be supervised by a licensed driver age who is 18 years or older when operating an ORV on nonhighway roads designated for off-road vehicle use.
DNR law enforcement services
Chief Raedel joined DNR in September of 2005. He retired from the Washington State Patrol after 26 years of service.
The Law Enforcement section has officers in DNR’s six regions. Their enforcement activities include:
• Monitoring recreation to avoid injuries and property damage
• Checking and monitoring permits
• Investigating accidents
• Controlling vehicle speeds
• Preventing the theft of natural resources, such as timber, bear grass, salal, cedar boughs and wood

JCTRA purchases new equipment for maintaining the trails! |
|
Posted by: mikeames on Thursday, February 14, 2008 - 01:49 AM |
Funded by a National Recreational Trails Program (NRTP) grant from the Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) of Washington State, the Jones Creek Trail Riders Association has recently improved our roster of trail maintenance equipment.
Late in 2007, JCTRA purchased a 2007 Polaris 6X6 from ProCaliber Motorsports. The 6X6s are mainly used to haul gravel and supplies to and from trail work projects.
In mid January JCTRA purchased an ATV Wagon model 1600 ATV trailer. This heavy duty trailer is made to be towed behind an ATV or 6X6 and can haul up to 1600lbs of rock or gravel. The trailer has an electric dump bed and trailer brakes to help keep it under control.
In February of 2008, JCTRA purchased a 2008 Polaris 6X6 from The Outdoor Toy Store in Carson, Washington along with a 77" X 12' trailer from Trailer City in Portland, Oregon on which to haul it. These 6X6's are essential tools for hauling in the necessities needed for proper trail maintenance.
In the future, our grant allows for the purchase of 200 tons of crushed rock, along with cinder blocks, wood, straw, and silt fencing to help maintain the trails.
Jones Creek Trail Riders has committed nearly 1000 hours of volunteer labor as our matching funds for this grant. Those hours are donated at our many monthly work parties. It's a lot of hours and JCTRA can use all the help it can get to make the trails better.
If you're interested in attending a JCTRA work party, please monitor the "Work Party" block on the upper right hand area of the JCTRA home page, or even better attend one of JCTRA's monthly meetings at Pied Piper Pizza on Fourth Plain in Vancouver, Washington. The meetings are the last Wednesday of every month at 7:00PM.
For more information on work parties, you can also email our Vice President of Operations at joe@jctra.org
